During his National Day Rally speech on Sunday, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong outlined his government’s intention to build a 4th University to cater to more Singaporean students.
The PM said the objective is to allow 30 percent of each cohort to get into publicly-funded universities by 2015, compared to 23 percent today.
but 30% means out of a class of 40, only 12 will get into university!
i can accept 30% if it is 10 years ago but 30% today is too low!
and 30% in 2015 is even worse!! here are 3 reasons:
1. better foundation
with ever improving primary and secondary schools, students are getting much better grades than years ago. they get higher qualified teachers and better learning environment (more expensive, more high tech!) in school. so more students are suitable for university education. why should we stop these bright ones from getting a higher education locally??
2. higher intelligence
kids are also getting smarter due to better food and stuff like special formula milk designed to boost level of intelligence. my 2 year old boy is drinking dumex mamil gold which has AA, DHA, SA, Immunofortis.... anything and everything good can be found in the tin!! dumex scientist say all these are good, so i pay $80 for 2 tins every month for my boy! haha, kiasu parents :)
3. booming economy
our government also say that our economy is better and going to be even better! we have 2 giant casinos coming up, F1 racing, more tourists, more multi-national companies (MNCs) setting up offices in singapore. government also want us to be education hub, technology hub, water hub and so much more! so we need our universities to produced more talented graduates to work!!
what do you think?
